Abortion was made legal in the Supreme Court decision of Roe vs. Wade on January 22, 1973. Days later on January 29, the Board and Executive Director of Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas called an emergency meeting. With abortion now legal, Planned Parenthood Federation of America wanted to ensure that those in the Houston and Southeast Texas area would have easy access to it.
"Voluntary Pregnancy Termination" services, as Planned Parenthood called abortion, began on March 20, 1973 in Houston. By September of that same year, abortions had risen to 700. Following Planned Parenthood's footsteps, a dozen abortion clinics opened in the following year - including hopsitals, health care agencies and private clinics.
From September of 2000 - September of 2006, Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas has aborted at least 40,351 babies. Almost 1 out of every 3 babies that is killed in Houston through abortion, dies at Planned Parenthood. The building is located just across the street from one of the nation's largest community colleges and on the border of a predominately minority neighborhood - two groups that Planned Parenthood targets most.
